Rhode Races and Events – the folks who organize the Providence Marathon (and 1/2 Marathon and 5K); the Ocean State Rhode Races ( Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5k Race); and a variety of other races have added a new racing event to the Rhode Island race calendar: Newport Rhode Races featuring a Marathon, 1/2 Marathon and 5K.
The Marathon will start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Easton’s Beach in Newport, RI. The Half Marathon will start at 8:00 a.m. from the same location. The 5k will follow at 8:15 am – all from the same beautiful seaside start.
The marathon course is USATF certified and is a Boston Marathon Qualifier.
The course comprises a tour of Aquidneck Island starting at Easton Beach the race begins with a loop through Newport (the City-By-The-Sea) which opens up to Narraganset Bay at Brenton Point. The race continues along Newport’s southern shoreline looping back through the very famous ‘Bellvue Avenue,’ home to the glorious mansions of Newport. All runners, both 1/2 Marathon, and Marathon, exit Newport back towards the Easton’s Beach start line which is the finish of the 1/2 Marathon. The marathoners continue along the shoreline to the adjacent town of Middletown, running with the beach on your right-hand side the race does a U-turn when it reaches the natural wonder of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. Now you run with the beach on your left until taking a right onto the creatively named Hanging Rock Road which cuts through Norman Bird Sanctuary. After a few more miles you turn around and get to enjoy it all over again as you return to the finish line at Easton’s Beach.
